The Earthquake Network research project develops a smartphone-based earthquake early warning system capable of detecting earthquakes in real time and alerting the population in advance. Smartphones are capable of detecting earthquakes thanks to the accelerometer integrated into each device. When an earthquake is detected, users with the app installed are immediately alerted. Because earthquake waves travel at a finite speed (5 to 10 km/s), it is possible to alert populations not yet affected by the damaging earthquake waves.
